Dhanush Defends Viral Poes Garden Speech Amidst Anticipation for Period Actioner Kara

Dhanush addresses the viral controversy surrounding his Rs 150 crore Poes Garden house speech and its impact as inspiration versus meme material. As he prepares for the release of his 1991 Gulf War-set film Kara on April 30, the actor defends his journey from a teenager inspired by Rajinikanth to a successful homeowner, while detailing his upcoming projects with Mari Selvaraj and more.

Acclaimed actor and filmmaker Dhanush has addressed the intense public discourse and social media mockery surrounding his viral Poes Garden speech during recent promotional activities for his upcoming film Kara. The actor, known for delivering fiery oratory that frequently dominates headlines and meme culture, was probed about his previous comments made during the promotions of Raayan regarding his high-profile Chennai residence. In 2024, Dhanush shared the personal history behind purchasing his sprawling estate in the posh Poes Garden locality, a property reportedly valued at over Rs 150 crores. Responding to the debate sparked by his acquisition, Dhanush questioned the scrutiny, stating that had he known the purchase would become such a massive topic, he might have opted for a small apartment. He challenged the narrative by asking if he should not buy a house in Poes Garden or if he is expected to stay on the streets simply because he started there. The actor revealed that his desire to own a home in the elite neighborhood was born in his teenage years, sparked by the presence of legendary figures like Rajinikanth and the late former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Reflecting on the virality of his words and the subsequent memes, Dhanush narrated a poignant encounter at an airport where a bus driver requested a selfie. The driver informed the actor that it was his first time photographing a celebrity, explaining that Dhanush's Poes Garden speech had deeply inspired his son to work harder. Dhanush emphasized that the public can choose to view his story as inspiration or as meme material, noting that the latter is simply another form of entertainment, which remains his primary job. He reiterated his stance by asking if people like him should not be allowed to buy property in such localities. This defense comes as Dhanush prepares for the theatrical release of Kara on April 30. Directed by Vignesh Raja of Por Thozhil fame and written by Alfred Prakash alongside the filmmaker, the film features Dhanush as Karasaami, also known as Kara. The narrative is set against the backdrop of the 1991 Gulf War, portraying Kara as a robber grappling with a fuel crisis in Tamil Nadu that forces a desperate battle for sustenance.

The production boasts a significant ensemble cast including Mamitha Baiju as Selli, Jayaram as Muthu Selvan, KS Ravikumar as Kandhasaami, and Suraj Venjaramoodu as Bharathan. The film further stars Karunaas as Kasi Maayan, Sreeja Ravi as Dhanam, Prithvi Pandiarajan as Murugesan, and National Award winner MS Bhaskar. Beyond the release of Kara, Dhanush maintains a prolific schedule with several high-profile projects in his lineup. These include D55 directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy, D56 helmed by Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, and an upcoming collaboration with acclaimed director Mari Selvaraj. The actor's ability to blend personal aspiration with cinematic ambition continues to position him as a central, albeit polarizing, figure in the contemporary Indian film industry, ensuring his off-screen statements carry as much weight as his on-screen performances.
